The history of UPPO (formerly UPHLC)
The Unclaimed Property Holders Liaison Council (now UPPO) was formed during the 1992 annual conference of the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) held in Newport, Rhode Island. The value of a complementary association of corporate unclaimed property administrators articulating the concerns of the HOLDERS of unclaimed property and serving as liaison with the states soon became apparent to the corporate attendees.
During a series of creative sessions, this founding group of approximately 40 individuals representing 34 corporations developed the organization's mission, goals, bylaws, structure, and communications efforts. Committees were formed to develop these areas. In 1993, the first UPPO governing body was elected. Today, UPPO is recognized by NAUPA and other entities involved in the areas of unclaimed property as the voice of the HOLDER community. Currently with two hundred members and a strong and vibrant Board of Directors, UPPO stands ready to take on the challenges of this ever changing area of unclaimed property.
As its name implies, UPPO is a forum for discussion, education, and advocacy. Through cooperative efforts with NAUPA, UPPO seeks to ease the burden of reporting, eliminate confusion, simplify compliance issues, and ethically return property to rightful owners. The relationship between the two organizations is a win-win situation.
As we continued to grow and expand our role in the unclaimed property arena, the Unclaimed Property Holders Liaison Council changed its name to the Unclaimed Property Professionals Organization in late 2005, which more accurately represents the broad range of professionals that actively participate in our organization.
