UPPO's Board of Directors, with counsel from the UPPO membership, has created a strategic plan that demonstrates UPPO's commitment to the unclaimed property industry and the members it serves. UPPO has five main areas of strategic focus which are:

UPPO Strategic Plan
2009-2012
Marketing and Membership
UPPO will elevate its position and reputation in the Unclaimed Property industry and grow its membership by:
1) Establishing and implementing a comprehensive marketing plan.
2) Implementing a new dynamic website and association management software package to increase value to the members.
3) Obtaining membership research to evaluate current benefits and determine potential offerings.
4) Enhancing networking opportunities for members utilizing appropriate social networking applications and techniques.
Professional Development
UPPO will maintain its position in the industry as the premier provider of unclaimed property education and professional development by:
1) Sustaining the current educational offerings at on-site annual and regional conferences.
2) Delivering a professional development path through a certificate program.
3) Offering continuing educational credits for sister accreditation organizations (such as NASBA and ABA), through UPPO educational offerings.
Advocacy
UPPO will strengthen its position as the premier source for unclaimed property awareness and advocacy by:
1) Developing a systematic approach to obtaining and disseminating legislative information in a timely manner.
2) Identifying the roles and responsibilities of the Government Relations and Advocacy Committee (GRAC) and its sub-committees to maximize their efforts.
3) Working with legislative and regulatory groups to write/rewrite laws and regulations concerning unclaimed property.
4) Establishing relationships with state administrators/officials to open discussions regarding standardized reporting to create uniformity and efficiencies for all parties.
5) Identifying and fostering coalitions with key organizations, associations and government groups sharing similar goals and objectives as UPPO.
Leadership Development and Governance
UPPO will sustain itself through a focused emphasis on volunteer leadership development and governance by:
1) Defining the term "governance” in UPPO context.
2) Developing a process to educate and inform UPPO members of volunteer opportunities to increase volunteer activation.
3) Providing education and training to volunteers and Board members on non-profit governance, roles and responsibilities to maximize effectiveness.
4) Evaluating the level of sustained volunteerism/leadership throughout the organization in relation to the total membership.
5) Establishing development tools targeted to the needs of UPPO as an organization.
6) Exploring expansion of nomination process through creation of actual standing nominating committee to interface with membership and cultivate new leaders.
Financial Stability
UPPO will operate the association in a prudent and fiscally responsible manner to assure present and future member needs by:
1) Maintaining a positive financial status
2) Creating policies, procedures and internal controls consistent with best practices recognized by the accounting and association management industries.
3) Enhancing reporting capabilities to provide for analysis and forecasting;
4) Evaluating the feasibility of internalizing UPPO's accounting and tax functions;
5) Evaluating the role and responsibilities of the Association's Treasurer to maintain necessary and prudent oversight while transitioning the appropriate tasks to the UPPO Executive Director.
